Hong Kong has recorded 474.7mm of rain in the first 20 days of July, surpassing the typical monthly total by 23 per cent. The Hong Kong Observatory issued a warning on Tuesday that more rainstorms are expected over the weekend.
A review of Observatory data shows the city received 474.7mm of rainfall from 1 to 20 July. This amount exceeds the normal July total of 385.8mm by 23 per cent.
June also brought above-average rain, with 600.5mm recorded, 22 per cent higher than usual. The Observatory issued three black rainstorm warnings last month and a total of 48 rainstorm warnings since the start of June.
The figure is nearly double the 25 warnings issued in the same period last year. Meteorologists have linked the pattern to global warming and noted that a tropical cyclone is approaching.
The Observatory stated on Tuesday that rainstorms will affect the city again over the weekend.
