Hong Kong lifts amber rainstorm warning but wet weather persists

The Hong Kong Observatory lifted its amber rainstorm warning on Saturday afternoon, but the city will continue to face unsettled weather including strong winds, swells and heavy showers until the middle of next week.

The Hong Kong Observatory cancelled the amber rainstorm warning at 3.15pm on Saturday. It had issued the warning at 2pm after replacing the standby typhoon signal with the strong monsoon signal at 3.21am.

The forecaster said Tropical Cyclone Maysak was expected to move across Beibu Wan, also known as the Gulf of Tonkin, before heading towards the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and inland Vietnam, where it would weaken.

“Under the influence of the southeast monsoon associated with a ridge of high pressure, local winds will be strong offshore and on high ground at first [on Saturday],” it said. “Showers will be heavier in some areas with squally thunderstorms and violent gusts.”

The agency warned that strong winds, swells and heavy showers would continue until the middle of next week.
