Michigan father pleads guilty to shooting three children

Jeffrey Smerer admitted in court to killing his 17-year-old son and wounding two other children in a September 2025 attack. The 45-year-old Port Huron man said he was stressed over an upcoming sentencing for an indecent exposure charge. He entered the pleas without a deal from prosecutors.

Smerer pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one count of open murder, two counts of assault with intent to commit murder, two counts of first-degree child abuse and five counts of felony firearm use. The charges stem from the morning attack in which he used a .380 handgun on Kayleb Smerer, who died, and siblings Bentley Smerer, 13, and Kinzley Smerer, 12, who were critically injured. He also attempted suicide but survived after his gun jammed and family members disarmed him.
