Missouri man charged with killing grandmother over chores dispute

Dakota A. Sweeney, 28, faces charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action after allegedly shooting his grandmother in Carrollton, Missouri. The incident followed an argument about household chores, according to authorities. Sweeney was arrested at the scene without incident.

Late Wednesday night, around 10:25 p.m., a Carroll County deputy responded to reports of a shooting at a residence on West 14th Street in Carrollton, a town about 70 miles east of Kansas City. The deputy found Sweeney's grandmother deceased inside the home, the Carroll County Sheriff's Office reported in a press release via the Missouri State Highway Patrol. A witness identified Sweeney as the shooter; he remained at the scene and was taken into custody peacefully. Formal charges followed the next day. Sweeney had argued with his grandmother earlier that evening over his failure to do household chores, his grandfather told investigators in a probable cause affidavit. The grandfather recounted that Sweeney sat on a couch for about 30 minutes before pulling out a handgun and shooting his grandmother in the head without warning as she sat on another couch in the same room. Deputies arrested Sweeney just four minutes after arriving, at 10:29 p.m., and found a holster on him. The charging document describes him as a danger due to his 'willingness to shoot and kill' inside the residence without provocation. He is being held without bond, local radio station KTTN reported.
