Oregon teen faces murder charges in 2024 Uber driver killing

An 18-year-old suspect appeared in court on Tuesday for his role in the fatal shooting of Uber driver Joshua Kelvin nearly two years ago. Prosecutors described the attack as a planned ambush on two teenage passengers. The driver was killed and one passenger seriously injured in Portland, Oregon.

Joshua Kelvin, a 42-year-old Uber driver, died at the scene on June 4, 2024, after gunfire targeted his vehicle in Portland, Oregon. Deputy District Attorney Devin Franklin told the court that the then-16-year-old suspect and another person ambushed two passengers, aged 17 and 18. The suspect allegedly fired 17 to 18 shots, killing Kelvin and wounding the younger passenger seven or eight times. The older passenger fled on foot. Franklin noted the injured teen continues to suffer from his wounds and that the suspect allegedly used the same gun to injure someone else in January 2025. The case is proceeding in juvenile court due to the suspect's age at the time. He faces 10 charges, including second-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of conspiracy to commit murder, first- and second-degree assault, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, and attempt to commit a Class A felony. The suspect arrived at court not in custody but was ordered held following the hearing.
