Peruvian police arrested 76-year-old Evelindo López Díaz on Tuesday in Trujillo due to a red notice from Interpol issued by Spain. He faces an 11-year-and-six-month prison sentence in Spain for sexually assaulting his minor granddaughter between 2012 and 2018. He will be extradited to Madrid in the coming days.
Peru's National Police captured Evelindo López Díaz in the Víctor Larco district of Trujillo, capital of the La Libertad region. The arrest was carried out by personnel from the region's High Technology Investigation Division along with Interpol on Tuesday afternoon.
The 76-year-old Peruvian lived practically in hiding and used another address as a front. The capture followed police intelligence work, according to official sources.
López Díaz has been sought by Spanish authorities since 2012 for sexually assaulting his minor granddaughter in Madrid until 2018. He already has a firm 11-year-and-six-month prison sentence in Spain for sexual assault on a minor.
The detainee will be transferred to Madrid in the coming days to serve his sentence.
