ARLINGTON -- The Texas Rangers parted ways with key figures from their 2023 World Series-winning team by non-tendering contracts to outfielder Adolis García, catcher Jonah Heim, and relievers Josh Sborz and Jacob Webb before Friday's deadline. This move makes the players free agents in their final year of arbitration eligibility, with García projected to earn $12.1 million and Heim $6 million.
García, 32, and Heim, 30, were American League All-Star starters and Gold Glove Award winners during the Rangers' championship run. García earned AL Championship Series MVP honors, slashing .323/.382/.726 in 15 postseason games, including a walk-off home run in Game 1 of the World Series. However, over the past two seasons, García's .675 OPS ranked 117th among 123 qualified hitters, with a .227 average, 19 homers, and 93 adjusted OPS in 2025. Heim posted a .602 OPS in 924 plate appearances over the same period, batting .213 in 2025 after a .258 average and .755 OPS in 2023.
Sborz, who threw the final pitch of the 2023 World Series with a 0.75 ERA in 12 postseason innings, missed all of 2025 recovering from right shoulder surgery and pitched just 16⅓ innings over the prior two seasons. Webb, a right-handed reliever, was also let go, leaving the Rangers to rebuild their bullpen.
"I'd like to express the club's sincere appreciation for the efforts of each of the four players included in today's announcement," said Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young. "Regardless of what happens moving forward, Adolis, Jonah and Josh will always be remembered for their contributions to the first World Series title in franchise history."
The Rangers attempted to trade García and Heim following the GM Meetings but found no takers. They signed outfielder Sam Haggerty to a one-year deal for 2026 and have four arbitration-eligible players remaining: Jake Burger, Josh Jung, Josh Smith, and Ezequiel Duran. At catcher, Kyle Higashioka provides veteran presence, with Willie MacIver recently claimed off waivers and prospect Malcolm Moore ranked No. 11 in the system.
