Shootout on R61 near Mthatha leaves suspect fatally wounded

Eastern Cape police engaged in a fatal shootout with a suspect on the R61 road near Mthatha Airport during an operation targeting unlicensed firearms. The suspect opened fire first, prompting police to return shots, resulting in the suspect's death at the scene.

On January 8, 2026, a routine police operation turned deadly on the R61 highway between Cicira and Mthatha Airport in the Eastern Cape. Officers had spotted a vehicle matching the description of one suspected to carry unlicensed firearms and moved in to search it.

As the police approached, one occupant stepped out and began shooting at them. The officers responded with fire to counter the immediate danger, wounding the suspect in the process. Despite efforts by emergency medical services, the individual was pronounced dead on site.

Police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana provided details on the incident: “As police officers approached the vehicle to conduct a search, one occupant exited and immediately opened fire on them. In response to this direct and immediate threat, the police officers returned fire to neutralize the attack. The suspect was wounded in the exchange. All relevant role-players, including the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), were summoned to the scene. Emergency Medical Services also attended; however, the suspect was declared deceased at the scene.”

The event underscores ongoing efforts to combat illegal arms in the region, with IPID now investigating the police's use of force. No other injuries were reported among the officers or bystanders.
