Tom Morello writes new song for Final Fantasy 14

Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello has composed a new track for Final Fantasy 14, fulfilling composer Masayoshi Soken's long-held dream. The song, titled Everything Burns and featuring Beartooth, will debut in the game's Arcadion battle arena. It arrives alongside Patch 7.4, Into the Mist, set for release on December 16.

Collaboration Details

Final Fantasy 14's score has long incorporated rock influences, with contributions from artists like Jason Charles Miller of Godhead, who sang on Endwalker's 'Close in the Distance.' Composer Masayoshi Soken has cited rock's ability to hype up battle content, noting in an earlier interview, 'Battle content really matches well with rock music... it's very easy to get involved in.' Soken revealed Rage Against the Machine as his favorite band, making this partnership a personal milestone.

The collaboration began when Miller informed Morello of Soken's fandom. In a video message, Morello explained, 'So I got down to work and wrote this track…with Beartooth, a great band. We wanted to make something super heavy and super powerful for Final Fantasy 14. I wanted to make an absolute rocking banger of a track that would mirror the energy and the potency of this game.' A preview snippet is available in social media posts and a trailer.

Soken expressed disbelief and excitement on social media, stating (via translation), 'Suddenly, a song gets sent from my top fave, and it gets implemented in the game - that's the flow, and even as I'm writing this now, it's totally nonsensical!' He described nurturing the track for a year to integrate it optimally into the Arcadion stage.

Patch Context

Everything Burns will stream on platforms starting December 17, one day after Patch 7.4 launches. Titled Into the Mist, the update extends the story and removes glamour restrictions, allowing cross-job outfit customization—a change director Naoki Yoshida approved reluctantly to better align with player preferences, despite his preference for job-specific identities.

This addition enhances the MMORPG's fashion-focused endgame, potentially boosting engagement amid recent player fluctuations.
