The front features Shinkansen, Tokyo Tower and expressways symbolizing postwar reconstruction, while the back shows Mt. Fuji, cherry blossoms and doves. Each coin, 40 mm in diameter and weighing 31.1 grams, will sell for ¥34,800.
Japan's Finance Ministry announced on Tuesday the release of 40,000 commemorative ¥1,000 silver coins to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Showa era, which began in 1926 and lasted until 1989. The obverse side displays color illustrations of the Shinkansen bullet train, Tokyo Tower and expressways, representing the nation's postwar reconstruction and rapid economic growth.
The reverse features Mt. Fuji, cherry blossoms and doves of peace. Measuring 40 millimeters in diameter and weighing 31.1 grams, each coin will be sold for ¥34,800.
Applications will be accepted by postcard or online starting August 20, with shipping expected around mid-December. A lottery will be held if demand exceeds supply. Detailed information will appear on the Japan Mint's website after 5 p.m. on August 19.
