28,000 turkeys culled after bird flu in southern Sweden

Bird flu has been confirmed at a facility with about 28,000 turkeys in Tomelilla municipality in Skåne. The Swedish Board of Agriculture has decided to cull all the animals, which were euthanized over the weekend. The agency has also designated high-risk areas in southern Sweden to protect other poultry flocks.

Bird flu, or avian influenza, has been confirmed at a turkey farming facility in Tomelilla municipality in Skåne. The site housed about 28,000 turkeys, and following the detection of the disease, the Swedish Board of Agriculture decided to cull all the animals to prevent spread.

"They were euthanized over the weekend," says infection control officer Ella Sigvardsson to SVT Nyheter. Tracing efforts are ongoing to identify any sources of the outbreak.

To protect Swedish poultry flocks, the Board of Agriculture has designated high-risk areas in southern Sweden effective from October 27. Within these zones, all feathered animals, such as chickens and turkeys, must be kept indoors to reduce the risk of contact with wild birds that may carry the virus.

According to the agency, the spread of bird flu is unusually high in the surrounding world during 2025. Animal owners are urged to contact a veterinarian immediately if their birds suddenly die or show signs of illness, to enable quick action and limit outbreaks.
