Major champion Aaron Rai placed a personal note and photos in Pablo Larrazabal’s locker ahead of the Genesis Scottish Open. The gesture came after the two golfers met and discussed Larrazabal’s difficult season. Larrazabal later shared the note publicly on social media.
Rai won the PGA Championship in May. During a conversation three days before the Scottish Open, Larrazabal mentioned his struggles, which included just three cuts made in 14 starts this year.
Rai decided to write a note encouraging his fellow professional. He included photos of Larrazabal’s past successes and placed the items in the Spaniard’s locker. The note read in part: “The guy in these pictures is who you are and he is much closer to the present you than you think. Keep fighting, keep working hard and most importantly keep believing.”
Larrazabal posted the note on Instagram, describing Rai as a true gentleman. He told the DP World Tour that the message reminded him of the values that drew him to golf decades ago. Rai said the action felt like the right thing to do after similar support had been shown to him following his major victory.
