American attempts asylum request in Mallorca over fear of Trump policies

A 34-year-old US citizen went to the Guardia Civil in Felanitx on Wednesday to request political asylum, citing fear of policies implemented by President Donald Trump.

The applicant presented himself at the Guardia Civil station in Felanitx to explain his situation and process the asylum request. Officers informed him that the station was not the competent authority for such procedures.

Despite the clarification, the man insisted that his request for political asylum be recorded. The civil guards collected his personal details, necessary documentation and made photocopies to forward the application to the Policía Nacional.

The request will be assessed by the competent administration, which will determine whether the conditions set out in international and Spanish law are met to grant international protection.

A federal appeals court on Friday ruled that President Donald Trump’s proclamation describing migration at the U.S.-Mexico border as an “invasion” and using that finding to suspend access to asylum exceeds the authority Congress granted in immigration law. The decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit could require the government to restart at-the-border asylum processing, though the administration has indicated it plans to seek further review.
