Anthrax completes mixing of first new album in nearly a decade

Thrash metal legends Anthrax have finished mixing their long-awaited follow-up to 2016's For All Kings, marking their first new studio album in almost ten years. The band worked with producer Jay Ruston at Dave Grohl's Studio 606 in Northridge, California. Fans can expect a single release by the end of 2025, with the full album slated for 2026.

Album Details

Anthrax's upcoming album represents a significant milestone, coming nearly a decade after For All Kings. Drummer Charlie Benante announced the completion of mixing via social media, highlighting the project's progress. The band reunited with producer Jay Ruston, who previously helmed For All Kings and 2011's Worship Music, ensuring continuity in their sound.

Recording and mixing took place at Studio 606, owned by Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. Bassist Frank Bello expressed excitement in a recent interview, stating, "We all are very, very hungry, 'cause we're in mixing right now. The new ANTHRAX record, I'm proud to say, I'm very psyched about this." He emphasized the band's hunger after years of delays due to COVID-19, side projects, and personal commitments.

Musical Direction and Songwriting

The album features crushing riffs, hooky choruses, and thrashy elements, with Bello noting Joey Belladonna's vocals as some of his best on an Anthrax record. Guitarist Scott Ian described the material as riff-centric, including their fastest song yet and tracks with epic feels reminiscent of past hits like 'In The End.' The songwriting process involved digital demos exchanged among members in different cities, followed by in-person sessions to refine ideas.

Ian mentioned aiming for a record that 'punches people in the face,' focusing on live-friendly songs with mosh parts and breakdowns. Benante revealed a trippy album cover designed with artist Mark Stutzman, inspired by David Blaine's work.

Release Plans and Context

A new song is planned for release by the end of 2025 to tease the album, with full touring focused on 2026. Formed in 1981, Anthrax has released 11 studio albums and earned multiple Grammy nominations. This project follows their 40th anniversary celebrations and builds on the critical acclaim of For All Kings.
