Anthropic adds dreaming feature to Claude managed agents

Anthropic unveiled a new dreaming capability for its Claude Managed Agents during the Code with Claude developers conference in San Francisco. The feature allows agents to review recent sessions and store key patterns in memory for future tasks. The company also plans to expand access to other tools and increase usage limits for subscribers.

The dreaming process runs on a schedule and analyzes sessions across multiple agents to identify recurring patterns, mistakes, and shared preferences. Users can opt for automatic memory updates or review proposed changes themselves. This approach helps overcome limits in context windows during extended projects involving several agents working together over hours or days.

The policy shift, announced over the weekend, addresses severe system strain from high-volume agent tools previously covered under $20 monthly subscriptions.

Anthropic has extended its memory capability to the free tier of its Claude AI chatbot, allowing users to reference past conversations. The company also released a tool to import memories from competing chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini. This update coincides with Claude's surge in popularity amid a dispute with the US Department of Defense.

The move underscores growing concerns as the AI is restricted to a tech coalition via Project Glasswing.

After Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said in late February that the company would not allow its Claude model to be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons, senior Pentagon officials said they have no intention of using AI for domestic surveillance and insist that private firms cannot set binding limits on how the U.S. military employs AI tools.
