Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele stated on Wednesday that funding for state police services must be entrenched as a first-line charge in the ongoing amendment of the 1999 Constitution.
This measure would guarantee financial independence similar to the judiciary, preventing governors from withholding funds based on compliance.
Bamidele warned that without such safeguards, business groups, cabals and criminals could abuse the system, noting risks extend beyond political actors.
The National Assembly is developing a framework to promote discipline, institutional independence and fiscal autonomy while moving policing powers to the Concurrent Legislative List.
