The BJP has secured its first absolute majority in the Assam assembly. The NDA alliance won 102 seats while Himanta Biswa Sarma won from Jalukbari for the sixth time. This marks the BJP's third consecutive term in power.
In the 2026 Assam assembly election results, the BJP won 82 seats in the 126-member house, securing an absolute majority for the first time. Allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) won 10 seats each, giving the NDA a total of 102 seats.
This is the BJP's strongest position in Assam a decade after first coming to power. In 2016 and 2021, it won 60 seats each time and formed governments with allies. Himanta Biswa Sarma won the Jalukbari seat for the sixth consecutive time by more than 89,000 votes. He said, “This victory is an expression of support to development, women’s power worship, self-identity and strong support towards developed Assam. This great mandate strongly establishes the need for overall development and protection of indigenous people from Barak to Brahmaputra, and from upper to lower Assam.”
Congress managed only 19 seats, including losses for Gaurav Gogoi and Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia. The Congress-led front won 21 seats total, while AIUDF secured two. The NDA swept all seats in ethnic Assamese, tribal, and Bengali-Hindu majority areas except two, which went to minority-heavy constituencies.
The campaign featured sharp rhetoric against illegal immigration and Miya Muslims, focus on mega road and bridge projects, private investment, and unprecedented women-targeted welfare schemes. The verdict reflects polarisation along ethnic and religious lines alongside Sarma's personal appeal.
