Chico library shooting leaves two dead, child injured

An 18-year-old man opened fire inside a library in Chico, California, on Monday, killing two people and injuring a child before police took him into custody minutes later.

Chico police responded to reports of an active shooter at the Butte County Library at 5:12 p.m. Monday. Officers arrived within two minutes and arrested Bradley Scott Sayer by 5:16 p.m. after he ran out the back of the building.

The victims were identified as 74-year-old Robert Johnson and 46-year-old Jacob Hull. A female juvenile with Hull was injured, likely by broken glass, and was treated at a hospital before release. All three were library patrons.

Investigators said Sayer appeared to be attempting a Columbine-style attack and had no known connection to the victims. They recovered one firearm at the scene and two more in his vehicle.

"I am heartbroken by this senseless violence," said Assemblymember James Gallagher. California Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their swift response. Butte County libraries director Misty Wright said the incident shattered the sense of safety in libraries.
