Clarence Carter, the blind Southern soul and blues musician known for hits including 'Patches' and 'Strokin',' has died at age 90. He passed away Wednesday of natural causes.
Carter was born Jan. 14, 1936, in Montgomery, Alabama, and lost his sight as a child. He taught himself guitar and studied music at Alabama State College before launching a career that included recording at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, alongside artists such as Duane Allman and Wilson Pickett. His 1970 single 'Patches' reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the 1986 track 'Strokin'' became a nightclub staple despite limited radio play and later appeared in films including the 1996 remake of The Nutty Professor and Killer Joe.
