The goalless draw between Nacional and Universitario in Montevideo allowed Coquimbo Unido to advance to the round of 16 for the first time in its history. The Chilean champion leads its group with 10 points after beating Deportes Tolima.
On Tuesday, Coquimbo Unido thrashed Deportes Tolima 3-0 in the fifth round of the group stage. This result left the Pirates atop the table with 10 points, ahead of Tolima on seven.
The 0-0 draw between Nacional of Montevideo and Universitario of Lima on Wednesday secured the Chileans' passage. Uruguayans and Peruvians, who had four points, can no longer catch them.
The side coached by Hernán Caputto will close the group stage by visiting Nacional without pressure. In 1992, Coquimbo had been eliminated in the group phase.
