The Delhi Gymkhana Club has urged the Union government not to disrupt its operations until there is clarity on alternate land allotment. The move follows a government notice to vacate its 27.3-acre premises by June 5. The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear a related plea today.
In a letter dated May 23 to the Land and Development Office, the club’s officiating secretary Rajesh Bhatnagar requested reconsideration of the timeline for vacating the Safdarjung Road premises. The General Committee said there should be no dislocation until issues such as alternate land allotment, recognition of past investments, and protection of staff interests are clarified.
The Centre initiated the re-entry process on May 22, stating the land is needed for strengthening defence infrastructure. The notice requires handover by June 5, after which possession may be taken by law.
Separately, the Delhi High Court will hear a lawsuit filed by club member Vijay Khurana against the eviction order. The plea describes the stated reasons as a sham and seeks to prevent forced dispossession without compensation or a bona fide public purpose.
The club, founded in 1913, has around 14,000 members. It has been administered by a government-nominated committee since 2022 following a National Company Law Tribunal order.
