On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, police in Diani, Kwale County, responded to reports of a disturbance at a guesthouse along Beach Road. The Dutch national had allegedly assaulted his 32-year-old Kenyan girlfriend and vandalised property, prompting the cottage management to alert authorities. Led by the Officer Commanding Station, officers apprehended the suspect five kilometres from Diani Police Station after security guards subdued him and rescued the woman, who was taken to Diani Beach Hospital for treatment.
The suspect initially locked himself in his room and refused to cooperate, requiring persuasion from police. A search revealed a white substance believed to be a narcotic drug, and he appeared intoxicated. Upon arrival at Diani Police Station, he escalated the situation by yelling abuse, spitting on two officers, making obscene gestures, and threatening them, as captured in a widely shared social media video. The officers remained calm and professional despite the provocation.
In a statement on Wednesday, October 29, Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement and use proper channels for grievances. "The Service urges members of the public to cooperate with police officers and to channel any grievances or complaints through accountability mechanisms, rather than resorting to abusive or violent behaviour," Nyaga said. He condemned the attack, stating, "Any attack, whether verbal, physical, or otherwise, against a police officer constitutes an affront to the rule of law and undermines the integrity and dignity of the National Police Service."
Inspector General Douglas Kanja commended the officers' restraint, noting it reflects ongoing police reforms enhancing professionalism and human rights respect. The suspect, addressing the media that morning, apologised and attributed his actions to a psychosis episode, saying, "I had a psychosis episode. I need my medicine. I had not had water and food for a long time." He was transported to Kwale Law Courts to face charges of assault and illegal stay, with deportation expected.
