Emily Deschanel discussed the different ways she and David Boreanaz delivered lines on the long-running procedural Bones during an appearance on David Duchovny's podcast.
Deschanel, who played forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan, explained that her character required exact delivery of the scripted dialogue.
"[Boreanaz] played a character when we were working together that very much didn't have to say the words verbatim," she said on the Fail Better podcast. Her lines involved scientific terminology that demanded precision.
Boreanaz, who portrayed FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth, was able to paraphrase his dialogue. Deschanel noted that his approach suited the character's less technical background and allowed for more flexibility on set.
The actors starred together for 12 seasons. Deschanel credited her conservatory training at Boston University for instilling the importance of preserving text as written.
