Emmys cuts five categories from 2026 NBC ceremony

The Television Academy has voted to remove five categories from the main Emmy Awards telecast airing on NBC this fall.

The categories being moved are supporting actor and supporting actress in a limited series or movie, writing for a limited series or movie, directing for a limited series or movie, and writing for a variety series.

These awards will instead be presented during the Creative Arts Emmys on September 5 and 6. The main ceremony, set for September 14 at 8 p.m. ET at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, will feature 19 categories and be hosted by Mariska Hargitay.

Academy officials said the change aims to allow more time for musical performances, comedy sketches, and longer acceptance speeches during the three-hour NBC broadcast.

"The Television Academy is committed to delivering a fresh new take on the Emmys broadcast," the organization stated.
