Finance Minister stresses need for thrift in budget use

Finance Minister Ato Ahmed Shide stated that saving-based budget utilization is necessary. The remarks came during a discussion in the House of People's Representatives on the 2019 budget draft.

In Addis Ababa on Sene 22 2018 the Plan Budget and Finance Affairs Standing Committee held a meeting on the 2019 federal budget draft. Finance Minister Ato Ahmed Shide said up to 2 trillion birr is needed to complete ongoing road projects and that priorities will be set for phased completion.

The minister noted that a study is underway on higher education budgets and indicated that regional governments may take responsibility for university health project costs.

Committee Chair Ato Desalegn Wedaje said the budget allocation plan follows the country's 10-year master plan. He added that external debt has been reduced to 1.4 percent and 30 percent of the budget is allocated for debt payments.
