In the historically Gaullist Cantal, a stronghold of Georges Pompidou, a young Rassemblement national (RN) candidate launches the party's first municipal list for the 2026 elections in Saint-Georges. At 22 years old, Cindy Rodier aims to carry the voice of the forgotten in this rural commune of 1200 inhabitants. Recent election results reveal a significant reservoir of nationalist votes in the area.
The Cantal, a region traditionally rooted in Gaullism and shaped by Georges Pompidou's legacy, is witnessing a new dynamic with the emergence of a Rassemblement national (RN) list for the 2026 municipal elections. In Saint-Georges, an agricultural commune of 1200 inhabitants with around thirty hamlets in the heartlands near Saint-Flour, 22-year-old marketing student Cindy Rodier leads this unprecedented initiative. It marks the first time in the department's history that a lepéniste list runs in municipal elections.
Each week, Rodier travels through the hamlets to meet residents and promote her platform. Confronted by a straightforward retiree, she faces the ground realities, as highlighted by the question: « Et alors, qu’est-ce que vous proposez ? » ("So, what do you propose?"). Her goal is straightforward: « Porter la voix des oubliés » ("Carry the voice of the forgotten"). Although the traditional right still holds strong in this area, the 2024 legislative elections revealed a significant nationalist surge. In the first round, nearly one in two voters in Saint-Georges backed the RN candidate, indicating a potential pool of support.
This candidacy exemplifies the RN's strategy to capture rural areas, where the party is gaining ground despite the entrenched conservative history. It remains to be seen whether this backing will translate into votes in the local ballot, in a context where the traditional right continues to dominate.
