Indian athletes delivered strong results on Tuesday in Glasgow. Harjinder Kaur claimed silver in weightlifting while Gulveer Singh made history in the 10,000m. Three boxers reached the semifinals to guarantee medals.
In the women’s 69kg weightlifting, 29-year-old Harjinder Kaur lifted a personal-best total of 227kg. She snatched 101kg and clean and jerked 126kg. Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau won gold with 240kg.
Gulveer Singh clocked 27:49.78 to take silver in the men’s 10,000m. Australia’s Ky Robinson won gold in 27:48.93. Gulveer became the first Indian man to reach the podium in the event at the Commonwealth Games.
In boxing, Preeti Pawar defeated Nicole Clyde of Northern Ireland 5-0 in the 54kg quarterfinal. Priya Ghanghas beat Scotland’s Niamh Mitchell 4-1 in the 60kg quarterfinal. Jadumani Singh also reached the semifinals. India now holds 12 medals overall.
