Heat triggers red alert in Euskadi and orange warnings in 13 regions

Spain's first heat wave of the season has placed nearly the entire country on alert this Sunday, with extreme risk declared in the Basque Country as temperatures exceed 40 degrees.

The State Meteorological Agency has issued a red alert across the Basque Country due to extraordinary danger, with exceptional maximum temperatures expected in Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia. Thirteen autonomous communities are under orange warnings, including Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Islas Baleares, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalunya, Extremadura, Galicia, Comunidad de Madrid, Navarra and La Rioja.

Some areas also face warnings for storms and heavy rain. Asturias could see accumulations of up to 30 liters per square meter, while Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha are forecast to reach 39 or 40 degrees with strong wind gusts and hail.

In the Comunidad de Madrid the orange alert runs from 13:00 to 21:00 hours, with up to 40 degrees expected in several zones. Galicia has warnings for heat and storms starting at 15:00 hours.
