A Chinese University of Hong Kong undergraduate has described how a maritime youth exchange with American peers broke down stereotypes, after the group received a reply from President Xi Jinping.
Liu Runjie, a 20-year-old fourth-year electronic engineering student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, joined a two-week maritime exchange programme held in March and April.
He said the genuine friendships forged during the voyage were recognised by the country. Speaking to the South China Morning Post, Liu noted that many prejudices and barriers stem from a lack of personal contact and authentic communication.
Xi Jinping's reply called on young people from both nations to continue contributing to cultural exchanges and mutual understanding. Liu described the letter as recognition of the programme's success.
