After a historic building collapsed in Görlitz, two of five missing people are safe. Police continue searching for three others.
A multi-family building on James-von-Moltke-Straße collapsed early in the evening. The structure, owned by the municipal housing company KommWohnen, contained rental and holiday apartments.
A police spokesperson said two guests of a holiday apartment who had not yet checked in are safe. Officers are still searching for three other people.
A gas leak was found under the rubble. The exact cause of the collapse remains unclear. About 120 responders with sniffer dogs and equipment from the Technical Relief Agency are on site. The area has been evacuated and cordoned off.
Mayor Octavian Ursu (CDU) visited the scene. A press conference is scheduled for Tuesday morning at 8:30 at the Jägerkaserne.
