Trial judges at the International Criminal Court have lifted restrictions on an individual previously barred from visiting former president Rodrigo Duterte at his detention facility in The Hague. A June 11 decision enabled the change.
In a seven-page decision dated June 11, the ICC Trial Chamber III granted the defense request to add the individual, whose name was redacted, to the list of people allowed contact with Duterte. The prosecution did not object to updating the restrictions.
The decision did not identify the individual. It was also unclear whether it referred to Honeylet Avanceña, Duterte’s partner.
Last year, Avanceña confirmed she had been barred from visiting after they allegedly discussed case details during a phone call. Duterte has been regularly visited by his children Sara, Sebastian, Paolo and Veronica, as well as his former wife Elizabeth Zimmerman and some grandchildren.
