Lionsgate’s The Furious and Bleecker Street’s Stop! That! Train! entered the domestic top ten over the weekend with $2.75 million and $2 million respectively.
The Furious, directed by Kenji Tanigaki, played on 1,251 screens. It earned a 97 percent critics score and 95 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Lionsgate acquired most worldwide rights excluding China, where the film opened at number one.
Lionsgate stated the title will be profitable and described the release as part of its commitment to serving audiences and exhibitors with original theatrical films.
Stop! That! Train! opened on 1,161 screens. Bleecker Street and producer World of Wonder said they were very pleased with the response from fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race and newcomers alike.
A rerelease of the 1949 film The Third Man grossed an estimated $19,000 at two theaters in new 35mm prints.
