Indonesia's defense chief inspects MSDF vessels in Tokyo

Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin met with Japanese counterpart Shinjiro Koizumi in Tokyo on Monday, inspecting Maritime Self-Defense Force frigates and submarines that Jakarta has shown interest in acquiring. The visit preceded the third round of two-plus-two talks between the countries' foreign and defense ministers.

Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi held a 55-minute meeting with Indonesian counterpart Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin in Tokyo on Monday. Earlier, the pair visited a key naval base to inspect Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) frigates and submarines that Jakarta has expressed interest in acquiring.

"We held broad discussions including on defense equipment and technology cooperation," Koizumi said after the meeting. The two sides also discussed the regional security environment and the future direction of bilateral cooperation, including the protection of military information to enable greater operational coordination.

The talks preceded the third round of "two-plus-two" meetings between the countries' foreign and defense ministers, highlighting deepening defense ties between Indonesia and Japan amid growing discussions on exports.
