Goaltender Jacob Markstrom has agreed to a two-year, $12 million contract extension with the New Jersey Devils, securing his future with the team starting from the 2026-27 season. The 35-year-old, in his second season with New Jersey after a trade from the Calgary Flames, expressed excitement about continuing his journey with the club. The deal provides stability to the Devils' goaltending tandem alongside Jake Allen.

Jacob Markstrom, acquired by the New Jersey Devils from the Calgary Flames on June 19, 2024, has signed a two-year extension worth $12 million, with an average annual value of $6 million. The contract begins with the 2026-27 season and runs through 2027-28, keeping the 35-year-old goalie with the team until he is 38.

This season, Markstrom has appeared in four games for the Devils, posting a 2-2-0 record, a 5.13 goals-against average, and an .830 save percentage. He started three of those games, including a return from injury in an 8-4 loss to the Colorado Avalanche, where he made 34 saves on 42 shots. The injury occurred during a 3-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on October 13. Last season, his first with New Jersey, Markstrom went 26-16-6 with a 2.50 GAA, .900 save percentage, and four shutouts in 49 games.

Markstrom, who is in the final year of a six-year, $36 million contract signed with Calgary on October 9, 2020, could have become an unrestricted free agent after this season. "I feel like this is the best place to be, and it's the best team I've been on," Markstrom said. "I'm super excited to continue this journey and see where we can go."

Devils coach Sheldon Keefe praised the extension, noting Markstrom's leadership and partnership with Jake Allen. "He's a gamer, he's a competitor," Keefe said. "To have both guys locked up at such an important position... it makes you feel good as a coach."

Allen echoed the sentiment: "I'm super happy for him... It gives our group some stability moving forward." The Devils have started the season strongly, winning eight of their first 11 games and sitting second in the Metropolitan Division.

Markstrom's career includes 243-214-63 record, 2.72 GAA, .908 save percentage, and 24 shutouts in 538 regular-season games across four NHL teams. In the playoffs, he is 14-17 with a 2.88 GAA and two shutouts in 31 games.
