Prime Minister Takaichi’s administration has submitted a bill to the Diet this week to amend the Imperial House Law, addressing the future of princesses in the imperial family after decades of delay.
The legislation would give princesses the option to either leave or remain in the imperial family. Discussions on the topic have continued for decades without resolution until now.
Emperor Naruhito, Princess Aiko and Prince Hisahito are central figures in the ongoing debate over succession and family structure. The bill marks the first concrete action by the government on the issue.
The submission comes from the administration of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who leads the LDP.
