A 40-year-old man faces charges of attempted murder after authorities say he struck a cyclist with his Jeep in Abington Township, Pennsylvania, sending the victim flying nearly 100 feet. The incident occurred Sunday evening and left the 24-year-old cyclist with serious head injuries requiring emergency surgery.
Phillip Prince was arrested at the scene after the collision on Meyer Avenue. Police said he had followed Colin Cassidy and three other cyclists before confronting Cassidy over suspicions that the bicycle was stolen.
According to investigators, Prince then drove onto the sidewalk and struck the back of Cassidy's bicycle. The impact threw Cassidy 90 to 95 feet, and witnesses and video evidence supported the account. Cassidy was found unconscious and bleeding from the head.
Prince remains in the Montgomery County Jail. He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary arraignment on Monday and faces additional charges of aggravated assault by vehicle, homicide by vehicle, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person. A preliminary hearing is set for July 22.
