Kenyan elected to head World Farmers Organisation

The chief executive of Kenya's Farmers Federation has been elected president of the World Farmers Organisation at its Nairobi conference.

Dr Daniel Mwenda M’Mailutha won by seven votes out of 81 against Australia’s Fiona Simpson in the election held from June 8 to 10 this year. He becomes the first Kenyan and second African to lead the organisation.

His victory was praised by Agriculture Minister Mutahi Kagwe and Nduati Kariuki. Mwenda said the post will allow him to represent farmers from all continents for the next two years.

His agenda includes strengthening the organisation’s unity, promoting digital technology and pushing African governments to honour the Maputo and Malabo commitments. His formal leadership programme will launch in August.
