Kerala man booked for calling PM Modi a traitor on social media

Police in Kerala have registered a case against a man who called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a 'traitor' in a social media post. The complaint came from a BJP activist, leading to charges under laws against provocation and nuisance. An investigation is underway to trace the post and question the accused.

In Sreekandapuram, Kannur district of Kerala, authorities registered a case on Friday against Rajan C. Kottoor, a resident of Kottoor, for a Facebook post made on March 3. The post allegedly referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “traitor,” according to the police statement issued on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

The complaint was filed by a local BJP activist, prompting the filing of a first information report (FIR). The FIR states that the remark defamed the Prime Minister and constituted a provocative act intended to incite a riot. Charges have been invoked under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which addresses wanton provocation with intent to cause a riot, and Section 120(o) of the Kerala Police Act, pertaining to causing nuisance.

Police initiated the probe on Friday evening following the complaint. As part of the ongoing investigation, officers plan to interrogate Kottoor and trace the electronic device used for the post. No arrests have been reported yet, and the matter remains under active scrutiny by local authorities.
