The Kenya Wildlife Service has issued an update on the deaths of 15 elephants in the Amboseli area between 24 June and 24 July 2026.
KWS said 10 of the elephants showed similar clinical signs including partial paralysis that left them unable to stand before dying within one to two days. Samples were collected and submitted to the University of Nairobi and other laboratories.
Preliminary findings from the University of Nairobi detected a potential toxic substance in samples from several of the affected elephants. Further quantitative analysis is required to establish the concentration and source of the substance.
Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku demanded a swift report. KWS Head of Communication Duncan Wanyama confirmed the elephants were found on surrounding ranches 15 to 30 kilometres from the park boundaries.
