Man stabbed to death on Mumbai local train, accused arrested

A 22-year-old passenger identified as Mayank Lohar was fatally stabbed inside a moving local train in Mumbai over a dispute about keeping the coach door open during heavy rain. The accused, Roshan Suvarna, was arrested the next day by Borivali Government Railway Police.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening aboard a Churchgate-Nallasopara fast local train. Lohar was attacked between Andheri and Borivali stations and later died at Shatabdi Hospital.

Police said the fight began after commuters confronted Suvarna, 30, who then pulled out a knife from his bag. Suvarna, a resident of Mira Road with no prior criminal record, jumped off the train at Borivali station and fled.

Officers tracked him using CCTV footage from nearly 400 cameras across the Western Railway corridor. They identified him through a company logo on his T-shirt and arrested him at Panvel railway station around 2 pm on Wednesday.

Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh vice president Siddhesh Desai said the attack exposed security gaps, noting that many stations lack effective screening despite carrying over 7.5 million commuters daily.
