Marc Márquez takes pole and sprint win in rainy Jerez GP

Marc Márquez claimed pole position and victory in the Spanish GP sprint race at Jerez on Saturday, overcoming a crash in heavy rain. The Ducati rider remounted from 17th after switching to rain tires and overtook rivals. The win puts him in contention for his 100th Grand Prix victory.

Marc Márquez topped qualifying in wet conditions at the Circuito de Jerez-Ángel Nieto with a 1:48.087 lap time, ahead of Johann Zarco. It marked his third pole at the track and first in eight months since Hungary 2025. Brother Álex finished fifth after crashing on his best lap.

In the sprint race, Márquez led from pole until lap seven when Álex passed him. Heavy rain caused chaos: he crashed in the final corner five laps from the end, recovered his bike, pitted for rain tires, and rejoined in 17th, nine seconds off the leader.

He charged back: after Brad Binder fell, Márquez overtook Pecco Bagnaia at Nieto-Peluqui corner to win. "I think it's the first time I win after crashing; we were very lucky," Márquez said. Bagnaia was second, Franco Morbidelli third, dedicating his podium "to those without hope."

Jorge Martín retired with brake issues, standings leader Marco Bezzecchi crashed, and Pedro Acosta finished 12th. Márquez gained 12 points, now fourth and 24 behind Bezzecchi. He seeks a Sunday win here, his first since 2019, after a seven-month drought.
