Martina Navratilova backs WTA genetic screening policy

Martina Navratilova has expressed strong support for the WTA's new eligibility rules requiring genetic testing for players. The 18-time Grand Slam champion described the move as a clear step to ensure only biological females compete in women's tennis.

Navratilova posted on X that she played no role in shaping the policy but welcomed its clarity. "I am very happy that we at the WTA are clear that we are a women’s association and only women, as in females, can compete at the highest level of women’s tennis," she wrote.

The policy replaces a 2024 rule that permitted transgender women to compete if they maintained testosterone below 2.5 nmol/L for two years. It now relies on a single test for the SRY gene using a cheek swab, saliva sample, or blood draw.

Navratilova has faced online criticism labeling the rule invasive and discriminatory. She responded that the measure aims to protect fair competition rather than exclude anyone. WTA officials said they remain committed to treating all players with dignity during implementation, which begins this year.
