Max Scherzer threw 3 2/3 innings in a rehab start for the Buffalo Bisons on Friday night. The 41-year-old allowed three runs on five hits while striking out five.
Scherzer threw 73 pitches and saw his fastball average 93.4 mph, reaching as high as 95.7 mph. The outing came between similar appearances by Dylan Cease on Thursday and Shane Bieber on Saturday. The Toronto Blue Jays face multiple injuries to their rotation, including José Berríos and Bowden Francis, both recovering from Tommy John surgery, and Cody Ponce, who is sidelined with an ACL injury. Scherzer has posted a 5.99 ERA across 22 starts this season. If his recovery continues without setbacks, Cease could return to the Blue Jays rotation during their series against the Phillies that begins Monday at Rogers Centre.
