New Mexico mom gets probation after teen's fatal shooting

A New Mexico mother avoided jail time after pleading no contest to providing alcohol to minors at a party where a 19-year-old guest fatally shot himself. Crystal Aguilar, 41, received 18 months of probation on June 22. The incident occurred at her Albuquerque home on May 31, 2025.

Aguilar allowed her teenage sons to host a graduation party that drew far more guests than expected after promotion on social media. She provided alcoholic beverages that were consumed by several underage attendees, including the victim, who brought a stolen gun to the event.

Police responded to reports of a gunshot and found the teen dead on the lawn. Aguilar told officers she had stepped outside to encourage the guests when she heard the shot. Witnesses said she had been doing shots with the teens and appeared intoxicated along with her husband.

Her attorney noted that New Mexico law permits parents to serve alcohol to their own children at home. The court accepted her no-contest plea, resulting in probation rather than incarceration.
