Oura Ring Symptom Radar flags lymphoma cases, chief medical officer says

Oura's chief medical officer, Dr. Ricky Bloomfield, said the company's Symptom Radar feature has prompted the discovery of multiple lymphoma cases by alerting users to vital sign deviations. The tool, originally developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, has also led to early detections of appendicitis and other conditions. Bloomfield highlighted the feature's role in encouraging timely medical consultations.

Dr. Ricky Bloomfield, Oura's first chief medical officer and a former Apple Health executive who joined in 2025, described how the Oura Ring's Symptom Radar has gone beyond detecting common illnesses. The feature monitors deviations from a user's baseline vitals, acting as an early warning system similar to a car's check engine light, according to Bloomfield. It originated from the 2020 TemPredict study with the University of California, San Francisco, which used ring data to predict COVID-19 up to 2.75 days before a test would confirm it. To avoid lengthy FDA approval for a specific diagnostic tool, Oura released it as a general wellness alert. Bloomfield revealed that repeated Symptom Radar notifications have led to diagnoses of lymphoma in four young women experiencing vague symptoms. 'Time matters for something like lymphoma, a form of cancer, and the sooner you can get seen and evaluated... the better your chances,' he said. Similar alerts have prevented appendicitis ruptures and even tipped off users to pregnancies through observed data patterns. Oura is advancing toward more targeted alerts. Through Oura Labs, the company is conducting studies on high blood pressure detection, with plans to seek FDA approval, and a women's health study focused on cycle tracking. Bloomfield noted the finger's advantages for biometrics, citing digital arteries and reliable nighttime data thanks to a seven-day battery life. Another underused feature, cardiovascular age, measures pulse wave velocity to assess arterial health. Employees have used it to motivate exercise, seeing improvements over time. Oura, holding a 74% share of the smart ring market per Omdia's November 2025 report, expanded its partnership with Essence Healthcare in 2026. The Medicare Advantage plan now provides the $300 ring free to Midwest members to promote preventive care.
