President Cyril Ramaphosa has filed papers in the Western Cape High Court to review the Section 89 Independent Panel report on the Phala Phala matter. Several political parties say Parliament should continue preparing an impeachment committee. The filing occurred on 25 May 2026.
Ramaphosa seeks to have the panel report reviewed and set aside. The report found he may have a case to answer over the February 2020 theft of foreign currency at his Limpopo farm. He has not sought an interim interdict against the impeachment process.
The Democratic Alliance, African Christian Democratic Party and other parties stated that Parliament must proceed with forming the impeachment committee. ActionSA’s Lerato Ngobeni described the court filing as an attempt to stall accountability.
Speaker Thoko Didiza received names for the 31-member impeachment committee before the 22 May deadline. A subcommittee is scheduled to meet on 29 May to amend National Assembly rules as required by the Constitutional Court.
