UDI president Guillermo Ramírez criticized the reproaches against deputy Diego Schalper for voting against the constitutional accusation of former minister Nicolás Grau.
Ramírez stated that although he does not share Schalper’s position, the level of bullying he has received is unacceptable. “I have a different position, but a difference does not enable one for that level of brawl,” he said on TVN’s Estado Nacional program.
The UDI leader specified that the attacks came mainly from right-wing tweeters using pseudonyms and that he observed them on social media, not inside Congress. He added that this is not the way parties defending similar ideas should conduct themselves.
Schalper explained in The Clinic that his decision was based on the conviction that the constitutional grievance was not met, after listening to former Constitutional Court president Marisol Peña. The accusation was approved in the Lower House with votes from the ruling party and the PDG, and will be voted on in the Senate this Tuesday, June 30.
