The Rassemblement National (RN) unveiled a counter-budget on October 23 that primarily targets ecology and immigration with severe spending cuts. This proposal reflects the far-right party's recent shift against France's environmental policies. Jean-Philippe Tanguy, an RN figure, had claimed just two days earlier to have a detailed program on environmental transition, focused on nuclear energy.
On October 21, Jean-Philippe Tanguy, a Somme deputy and Rassemblement National (RN) figure, stated at a press conference: « We are the only party, along with La France Insoumise, to have a written program on environmental transition. I challenge other political forces to present a program that doesn't fit on a Post-it ». He clarified, however, that this referred to the party's energy plan, centered on abandoning wind and solar power in favor of a massive nuclear relaunch.
The RN has no other concrete environmental program. A promised « ecology booklet » since 2023 appears to have been shelved, and the party lacks a designated spokesperson on the issue.
Two days later, on October 23, the same deputy presented a counter-budget that assaults all flanks of France's environmental policy. Ecology, like immigration, is the primary target of the far-right party's budgetary proposals. This financial document translates a shift underway in recent years: the RN has become the spearhead of the cultural offensive against the environment, successfully betting on gaining sympathy from conservative voters and securing additional budgetary leeway.
