Authorities have warned motorists of major road closures on the route of the 99th Comrades Marathon, which starts on Sunday morning.
The Up-Run begins at Durban City Hall at 5 o’clock and ends at Scottsville race course in Pietermaritzburg. Durban Metro Police spokesperson Boyzie Zungu said roads will close from midnight tonight. Affected routes include Pixley kaSeme, Russell Street, the N3 westbound, King Cetshwayo, King Cetshwayo Highway, the M13 in Westville, Josiah Gumede in Pinetown, the M13 in Kloof and Old Main Road in Hillcrest.
Zungu urged drivers to use alternative routes to avoid delays. Thousands of runners are expected to take part in the annual event.
SARS Commissioner Ngobani Makhubu will run his eighth Comrades and aims to raise R30,000 for the eThekwini Community Chest. He has collected about R20,000 so far.
