President William Ruto announced plans on Sunday to build a new road linking Malaba to the proposed Nakuru-Malaba highway. The move aims to improve connectivity to western Kenya without waiting for the full extension of the Rironi-Mau Summit Expressway.
President William Ruto made the announcement during a church service in Busia County. He said the government would start construction on the Malaba link road immediately rather than delay until the Rironi-Mau Summit highway reaches Mau Summit.
The proposed route runs from Malaba through Kimaeti, Kimilili and Bungoma before joining the planned Nakuru-Malaba corridor. Ruto stated, "We are building the Rironi-Mau Summit highway, which will eventually reach Malaba. However, I have said that as we wait for that one to reach Mau Summit, we start another one from Malaba as it climbs and connects with that one."
The Rironi-Mau Summit Expressway remains on schedule for completion by June 2027. The 233-kilometre project will feature a four-lane dual carriageway from Rironi to Naivasha and a six-lane section from Naivasha to Nakuru.
